New Feature Launch: Medicare Advantage Identification

We're excited to announce the launch of Medicare Advantage Identification – a new capability designed to improve Medicare coverage accuracy and eliminate ambiguity when verifying benefits for Medicare patients.

What We've Built

When a patient presents with Medicare, the standard approach is to check eligibility against a CMS payer formatted as {State}MCR (e.g., VAMCR). However, this check alone doesn't reveal whether the patient is actually enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan —which changes how claims should be routed and billed.

With this release, we now:

• Identify whether the patient is enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan
• Return the Medicare Advantage payer name
• Return the associated Nirvana payer_id
• Return the Medicare Advantage member ID

This logic is driven directly by the member's coverage details, allowing us to reliably distinguish between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage enrollment.

Why This Matters

Medicare Advantage misclassification is one of the most common causes of:

• Claims submitted to the wrong payer
• Avoidable denials
• Reimbursement delays
• Increased manual work for billing teams

By identifying Medicare Advantage enrollment upfront, we help providers:

• Route claims correctly the first time
• Reduce downstream billing errors
• Improve reimbursement predictability
• Deliver clearer benefit explanations to patients

No changes are required to your existing %MCR eligibility checks. If the patient has a Medicare Advantage plan, the medicare_advantage object will now be populated in the eligibility response. You can use this to:

• Correct Original Medicare assumptions when a Medicare Advantage plan is present
• Bill the correct Medicare Advantage payer
• Store and submit the correct member ID

If no Medicare Advantage plan is found, the object will be null or omitted. This enhancement fits directly into your existing workflow – now with clearer, more actionable Medicare coverage data from the start.
