Joanna Kaminski

Hello! My name is Joanna Kaminski, and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist based out of New York City. I’ve been in practice for 12 years, and am a Mercy College alumni. I have also been certified by The American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy.

Disappointment, failure, loss, frustration, anger and sadness are unavoidable aspects of human existence. The past cannot be rewritten. But the way in which we choose to come to terms with the past - as either members of a familial unit, a couple, or an individual - will go a long way towards determining our happiness in the present. I bring a warm, compassionate, non-judgmental approach to my work that arises out of my deeply held conviction that the most important determinant of therapeutic success will be the therapeutic alliance between patient and therapist.

I specialize in helping people dealing with relationship issues, life transitions, and marital and premarital troubles. I am also trained to help teens, adults, and elders (65+) with anxiety, coping skills, depression, self esteem, spirituality, substance abuse, and trauma and PTSD. I am bilingual, and can conduct therapy sessions in both English and Polish.

My approach begins with a focus on the strengths of the couple, family, or individual. I draw on my understanding of various therapeutic techniques and employ different therapeutic models. These modalities include Structural Family Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Emotionally Focused Couple’s Therapy (EFT).

One of the most important things I do in my life is to spend time with individuals who are seeking meaning and wholeness in life. You expect a warm and compassionate therapeutic experience when working with me. Please feel free to reach out to explore how we can work together. I currently offer both in-person and virtual therapy sessions.

If you are interested in working together please email me to schedule a free 15 minute consultation to see if we are a good fit. Costs for each therapy session are on a sliding scale ranging from $175 - $250.

What can Nirvana do for me?

We handle your mental health insurance electronically and file your claims for free. We also track the status of your claims and ensure they are processed correctly so you don’t have to worry about paperwork or making frustrating phone calls.

How does Nirvana’s mental health billing service work?

We work with your therapist to obtain all the information needed to file your claims. Then we file them electronically each week.

What do I need to do for Nirvana’s service to work for me?

You only need to make sure we have your  most updated insurance information. You don’t need to do anything else!

Can I check how much I will be reimbursed for therapy?

Nirvana has a free tool called the Peace of Mind Coverage Calculator, which estimates your reimbursement amount at the start of the calendar year, when your deductible has been met, and when your out-of-pocket maximum has been reached. You only need to enter the name of the therapist you’d like to see, along with your name, date of birth, and insurance information.

Once I start therapy, when will I be reimbursed?

Once you have met your deductible, your reimbursement will be mailed to you about 4-6 weeks from the date of your first eligible claim. In some cases, this process can take as long as 90 days.

Where will my reimbursement be sent?

Your reimbursement will be mailed to the address on file with your therapist and your insurer. We recommend verifying your address directly with your insurer.

How will I receive my reimbursement?

You will receive your reimbursement by check. Some insurers combine payments for multiple sessions and others send one check per session.

Can I track the progress of my claims as you process them?

Yes! We offer a free product called the Client Portal, which allows you to do exactly that. You may be invited by your therapist, but you can independently register here. With the client portal, you can view the exact status of your claims and reimbursements.

I have a general question. Can I contact you?

We’re glad to answer any questions you have. Email us at and someone from our Help Desk will reach out to you.
